August in Vancouver means Pride with the glitzy parade party winding through the city’s West End on the 5th. According to Pride organizers, Vancouver Pride Parade attendance exceeds the population of its host city, the City of Vancouver, and is the only Pride Parade in the world that can make this claim. Visit their website for a list of Pride events.
Yoga! Run! Party! On August 11th participate in the brand new SeaWheez, which according to host Lulu Lemon is the most fun half-marathon in the world. Get sweaty and make new friends on the beaches, seawalls and bridges in beautiful downtown Vancouver. Your $128 registration fee gets you a snazzy pair of SeaWheez training shorts!
Do you know what “cosplay” is? If you do, you’ll be lining up for the Vancouver Japanese Anime Culture Convention August 17-19 at the Convention Centre. General Admission starts at $50 per day, or buy a 3 day pass online. There are exhibits, contests and interactive events like Console Wars where you can compete against your buddies in a variety of awesome console games. Special guests include voice over artists and international cosplay stars.
Of course we have to preview our favourite event of the year, the Honda Celebration of Light, the spectacular annual fireworks competition on July 28th (Vietnam), August 1st (Brazil) & August 4th (Italy). You can sign up on the website for the latest news or follow them on Twitter @HondaCanada If you don’t have the perfect view from your Lamond Properties fabulous furnished suite, and you don’t want to compete for a tiny piece of beach, book a spot on the YVR Observation Deck.
Ticket prices will be ranging from $40 to $60, with all proceeds going to support the cost of the event. There will be enough seats to accommodate 1,500 people each night; bleachers will be located on the grassy area in front of the English Bay Bathhouse on Beach Avenue.
Please note that roads into the West End close around 7:30 pm on fireworks nights, and if you’re planning to arrive home after that by car, bring a copy of your Welcome Letter with you for proof of your address and parking.
Lamond Properties Pick of the Month: Perhaps in honour of Team Italy in the fireworks competition, check out La Casa Gelato on Venables. They claim to be the only gelato factory/store in the world that always has at least 218 flavours on location at all
times. Real cream, real eggs, fresh fruit purees, not a lot of sugar, no shortcuts, no cheating. Creative flavours can include wasabi, radicchio, basil pernod, ginger, carrot, honeydew melon, avocado, curry and nutty-date, even, sometimes, red currant and jalapeno ice cream.
