Canada Day and Folk Fest Vancouver!

July in Vancouver = great music! The 1st of July is Canada Day, plus it’s the last day of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. But the end of the Jazz Fest is only the beginning of a great month of music for every genre. Acts appearing in July include k.d. lang, Ben Harper, the Shockwave Music Festival featuring Voivod & Fear Factory, Slash, Snoop Dogg, Neil Diamond, Il Divo and Iron Maiden. How’s that for an eclectic mix! For the latest concert listings check out Pollstar.com

On more music note: If you haven’t seen Lucinda Williams, make a point of attending the Folk Fest at Jericho Beach on July 13th. Lucinda is one of the great American songwriters, and her new album “Blessed” is receiving great reviews.

Speaking of Canada Day… there is lots to do in the city. Head to Granville Island for a ton of events from a truly Canadian pancake breakfast to a unique False Creek Ferry Ballet! Canada Place hosts the annual celebration including the epic fireworks presentation. If you are interested in getting out of the city, head to the Steveston Salmon Festival which includes a parade, craft shows, cultural events, and Steveston’s famous salmon barbecue, where over 1200 pounds of wild salmon filets are grilled over open fire pits.

The 17th Annual Chinatown Night Market continues through to September every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6:30-11 pm in Chinatown – 100 Block of Keefer Street. Check out the merchandise, multicultural performances and of course, the snacks!

If you’ve been inspired by Ryder Hesjedal’s phenomenal win at the Giro, check out Canada`s greatest criterium, the Gastown Grand Prix on July 11th. Watch North America’s top men and women cyclists race wheel-to-wheel on Gastown’s thrilling 1.2-km course with the hairpin corner. Women’s race 30 laps. Men’s race 50 laps. Action starts 5:45 pm.

LP’s pick of the month: Save-On Meats at 43 West Hastings, a restaurant and butcher shop with a 55-year-old history. Restaurateur Mark Brand, who owns six other local businesses including Gastown restaurants Boneta and The Diamond, reopened Save-On Meats with his wife and business partner, Nicole “Nico” Brand, in spring 2011. The new incarnation of Save-On Meats offers healthy, affordable diner classics for breakfast, lunch & dinner. Along with serving good food and meat in the butcher shop, Save on Meats is working with community leaders in the DTES to create jobs, implement sustainable business practices such as a rooftop self-powered organic rooftop green house, in house composting and bike delivery.
